Associate Professor Molly Ness, Ph.D., recently published “The effects of oral and silent reading on reading comprehension” in Reading Psychology.
A common question from elementary students is, “Do I need to read out loud?” In supporting students’ reading comprehension, is oral or silent reading more beneficial? Additionally, is students’ comprehension consistent across different types of texts, or does it change based on the text genre? The goal of the present study was to address these questions by determining the ways in which both modes of reading impact comprehension in different text genres.
